KHEDIVE This lamp is based upon a thurayya on display in the Ethnographic Museum in Cairo. Several thurwan of this type can also be found in the Great Mosque in Tlemcen, Algeria. The artist took the basic shape of the lamp and completely transformed its ornamental aspect. Eight rounded towers, each surmounted by a conical finial ending in a crescent (hilal) and each holding a glass qandil, are etched and perforated with Qur'anic inscriptions, either "Light upon Light" or "In the Name of God." The form is similar to Sharifa with similar incised window assemblies above and below the engraved and perforated body of the lamp. Four chains interrupted with ornamental elements suspend the lamp.
