MISHKAH SULTAN QALAWOON

The lamp shown here is based upon the form of an early 16th-century gilt copper Ottoman mosque lamp inscribed, curiously, with the name of the 13th-century Mamluk Sultan Qalawoon. The artist added a splayed foot. The mishkah is perforated and engraved with a calligraphic inscription that reads:

"And We have made it beautiful for the beholders and protected it from every rejected devil."
