SHEMS

The artist discovered a simple but graceful pendant lamp hanging in a modern Moroccan house near Tangier and reversed the form to create a domical lampshade. Three trapezoidal calligraphic medallions alternate with three large roundels containing interlacing geometric arabesques. The medallion inscriptions read: "No power but with Allah."

Above and below the medial band are two bands of foliate and geometrical scrolls. A ridge separates the domical lampshade from the neck of the lamp, which is perforated and engraved with a trefoil pattern. The neck flares out into a globular finial, which is without ornament.
